Linde has unveiled Europe’s largest liquid hydrogen trailer that is designed as well as built in-house in order to address the rising logistical challenges. The new trailer goes on to significantly raise hydrogen payload capacity, thereby reinforcing Linde’s strategic position as far as hydrogen logistics are concerned.

Amidst the rising demand as well as persistent limitations when it comes to hydrogen liquefaction capacity, Linde has introduced largest liquid hydrogen trailer that’s specifically designed for Europe in order to transport liquid hydrogen – LH2.

This in-house-developed vehicle, which was revealed at an official handover recently, sets a new yardstick when it comes to payload capacity and is designed to ease logical bottlenecks that are associated with hydrogen transport throughout the continent.

“Our trailer has a load capacity of 3.9 tons. That’s much more than was previously possible. This makes it the largest trailer currently on the road in Europe,” emphasizes Christiane Kerber, Vice President of Static Equipment at Linde Engineering.

It is well to be noted that as the conventional LH2 containers are limited to only 2.6 tons, this initiative by Linde fills a very critical gap.

“If you can’t find it on the market, build it yourself!” the company went on to state, thereby underscoring its proactive approach. This project happened to be spearheaded by the Schalchen site of the company, which is recognised as the centre of excellence when it comes to manufacturing components as well as modules.

“This project was made possible through strong cross-functional collaboration across Linde,” the company highlighted, thereby recognizing the overall effort as well as dedication behind the milestone. Although primarily it looks to support Linde’s distribution requirements, the new LH2 trailer will be accessible to other market participants as well, thereby throttling the overall hydrogen transportation capabilities across Europe.

It is well to be noted that liquid hydrogen, which is known for its exceptionally high density of energy, is very important as far as the broader energy transition efforts of Europe are concerned. But limitations in liquefaction capabilities, teamed with significant energy demands when it comes to maintaining temperatures at -253°C, go on to frequently require extensive transport distances. Linde has 2 hydrogen liquefiers at the Leung Chemical Park in operation stressing the significance when it comes to optimizing logistics to match up with production capabilities is concerned.

These findings are expected to create substantial opportunities for jobs, economic growth, and inward investment while supporting the UK’s decarbonization strategy.

Matthew Hindle, WWU’s Head of Net Zero & Sustainability, shared his thoughts:

“We know that low carbon hydrogen needs to play an important role in supporting the UK’s energy transition – including blending into existing natural gas supplies, or in its pure form for industry, transport, electricity generation and homes. To reliably produce sufficient hydrogen to meet these demands, it will be vital to diversify production methods and increase the levels of firm capacity needed for predictable supply.

“We’re excited to work with Equilibrion and NGN to better understand how nuclear-enabled hydrogen can support gas customers through the energy transition, by providing reliable, scalable low-carbon hydrogen for supply into the UK gas networks. SHyNE can support the reuse and adaptation of existing infrastructure to reduce costs, while accelerating the energy transition and enhancing energy security.”

Lewis Kirkwood, NGN Innovation Manager, highlighted the value of the SHyNE project:

“Hydrogen can be a key enabler of accelerated decarbonisation for industry, transport and heat, and as an energy network it’s critical we understand all the angles for hydrogen production and what’s required to ready our infrastructure.

Network Innovation Allowance projects such as this are essential to unlocking the potential for hydrogen investment, to support the UK’s decarbonisation strategy and diversify its energy portfolio, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and shore up energy security.”

The SHyNE project highlights the alignment between nuclear-enabled hydrogen innovations and the UK’s national sustainability goals. It also complements recent UK Government plans to expand nuclear electricity production and unveils new opportunities for the development of nuclear sites starting from 2025.

Through this landmark partnership, the SHyNE project establishes a foundation for collaboration between the nuclear and hydrogen sectors, unlocking the potential for low-carbon energy to drive the UK toward its 2050 Net Zero commitments.
